Camden Maine Stay Inn
December 11, 1620. When John Alden disembarked on Plymouth Rock as first passenger of the Pilgrims’ Mayflower he could not foresee that one of his direct descendant would have given birth to the mansion that now hosts the Maine Stay Inn. In 1802 in fact the carpenter Alden Bass, nephew of John Adams, built a house at 22 High Street. Those were the times when Thomas Jefferson was President of the United States, Route 1 was a dirt road and Maine was still a part of the state of Massachusetts. To visit the Maine Stay is to literally step into a venerable piece of history.
Relaxed, cozy and very friendly, the Maine Stay Inn is a grand old home located in the historic district of one of America’s most beautiful seaside villages. The home is an outstanding example of the progressive farm buildings common to 19th century Maine and is the second oldest of the sixty-six lovely homes that are listed on the National Register of Historical Places in the High Street Historic District. It projects the true essence of New England, its grace and charm, its history, its tradition.
The three parlors, one with a wood burning fireplace, are tastefully decorated. You may enjoy a gourmet breakfast at the old harvest table in the dining room where ideas and experiences have been shared for over two-hundred years, or at a table for two on the sun porch overlooking the garden.
Each of the guest rooms has individual style and character. Many of them have original wide plank pine flooring. All are very romantic, with modern conveniences (including Wi-Fi).
The inn’s grounds include a one-acre garden with tree-lined winding paths, a brook with a granite bridge, benches, and a swing.
Guests at the Camden Maine Stay can walk four blocks to over thirty miles of wonderful Camden Hills State Park trails, sail in a windjammer, eat lobster within yards of where they are being caught, or sit on the rock at the top of Mt. Battie where poet Edna St. Vincent Millay sat to gaze at the islands in the bay and gain inspiration. A two block walk down tree lined streets brings you to the Camden Harbor Park and to the shops and restaurants.
The Maine Stay has been featured on the covers of Condé-Nast Johansens, Karen Brown, Frontgate (America’s finest home selection) and Down East Magazine. Come and share the charm and the elegance of this historic New England inn with innkeepers Roberta and Claudio Latanza.
